EC announces intention to lift tariffs and quotas for Ukraine

27 April 2022 – According to a EC press release, this includes all safeguard quotas on certain steel products and anti-dumping measures by the European Union against exports from Ukraine.

The European Commission has proposed today to suspend for one year import duties on all Ukrainian exports to the European Union. The proposal, which is an unprecedented gesture of support for a country at war, would also see the suspension for one year of all EU anti-dumping and safeguard measures in place on Ukrainian steel exports.

EU measure to support Ukraine’s exports

This far-reaching step should help boost Ukrainian exports to the EU. It will help alleviate the difficult situation of Ukrainian producers and exporters in the face of Russia’s military invasion, the EC said in a press release.

The next step is that the proposal now needs to be considered and agreed by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

Steel: EU Safeguard quotas and anti-dumping measures

Before the outbreak of war, Ukraine had been exporting more than 7 million tonnes of iron and steel per year to the European Union. Ukraine has its own quotas in the EU Safeguard measure and is subject to at least two anti-dumping measures on steel.
