Steelmakers' Association Data Once Again Incorrect
Steelmakers’ Association Data Once Again Incorrect

11 September 2025 – The US Midwest Aluminum Premiums continued their upward rally on Wednesday, reaching a new record high. That the figures published by the European Steelmakers’ Association (EUROFER) can be considered questionable is something we had already proven almost exactly a year ago. Now, in an analysis of the annually published European Steel in Figures, we have once again identified faulty data.

US Midwest Aluminum Premiums Rise Again

The US Midwest Aluminum Premiums, which had already climbed to a new record high of approx. USD 0.73/lb by the end of last week, continued their rally on Wednesday and jumped to around USD 0.75/lb.

The US Midwest Aluminum Premiums represent the surcharge paid in the United States for immediately available aluminum. Premiums have been rising steadily for several months and have more than tripled since the end of January 2025.

EUROFER: Steelmakers’ Association Data Once Again Incorrect

That the figures published by the European Steelmakers’ Association EUROFER can be regarded as questionable is something we had already demonstrated almost exactly one year ago. Back then, we identified obviously false employment data, which forced EUROFER to issue corrections.

Steel Consumption Data Clearly Faulty

Now, in our analysis of the annually published European Steel in Figures, we have once again identified faulty data, which has been appearing in their publications for several years.

With the consumption data, accuracy does not seem to be taken too seriously. The published monthly consumption figures, extrapolated to full years, do not match EUROFER’s own Apparent and Real Steel Demand data. After Brexit, when the UK was removed from EUROFER’s statistics, the lobby group even miscalculated steel consumption by 50 million tonnes over a two-year period – something that was later quietly “corrected.”

Steel Consumption in European Steel in Figures 2025 Also Incorrect

In EUROFER’s latest jumble of figures, the European Steel in Figures 2025, further errors in the consumption data can be found. It was overlooked that the percentage shares do not match each other. In addition, the lobby group forgot to indicate that these were monthly figures. Running the numbers through makes it quickly obvious that there are even more mistakes hidden in the data.

Once again, it has become clear that the EUROFER report European Steel in Figures – which is used not only for economic but also for political decision-making – is riddled with dangerous errors, or in the worst case, consists of false claims and manipulated data.

Our investigative team will continue to track the number games of the European steel lobby. Have you noticed an error? Then please feel free to share it with us immediately.
