20 February 2025 – While the EU steel lobby conjures up the demise of European steel, the first steel makers are reporting good quarterly results that don’t fit the lobbyists’ doomsday scenario at all. And the EU agrees on a ban on imports of Russian raw aluminium.
Steel is doing good business in the EU again?
It doesn’t fit in at all with the constant howling of European steel mills for ever new and ever more serious protective measures if it is possible to do good business with steel again.
German steel maker drastically increases adjusted EBIT
While the shareholders of thyssenkrupp AG may have been pleased that the Steel Europe business unit was able to increase its adjusted EBIT almost 2.5-fold in Q1 2024/2025 compared to Q1 2023/2024 and increase its adjusted EBIT margin from 2.8% to 7.7%, it does not fit with the picture that German and European steel makers would like to paint of themselves on the political stage. The end of the world looks different.
Is the European steel lobby’s narrative not working?
So why there are already cries for more subsidies and more market protection remains questionable, especially as it is not just thyssenkrupp Steel Europe that is on the up. Other European steel and stainless steel manufacturers have also recently presented good figures that cast the European steel lobby’s narrative of dying steel in an extremely poor and questionable light.
Aluminium: EU member states agree on new sanctions against Russia
The European Union has been able to agree on a 16th package of sanctions against Russia. In addition to measures against the Russian shadow fleet, an agreement has been reached on an import ban on Russian raw aluminium. The exact measures are to be finalised next Monday by the foreign ministers of the EU member states in Brussels.
