Stainless steel exports increase and EU steel lobby is unhappy

23 December 2022 – Asian stainless steel exports have recently increased by up to 25%. The ghosts they called: European steelmakers’ lobby shows dissatisfaction with CBAM and ETS results. And a not so quiet message before the holidays.

Asian stainless steel exports on the rise

Stainless steel exports from Asia rose in November, according to latest figures, indicating further improvement in global demand. Compared to the same period in 2021, these have increased by up to 25%.

CBAM: EU steel and aluminium producers dissatisfied

As expected, EU steel and aluminium producers are dissatisfied with the outcome of the negotiations on the upcoming CBAM and ETS regulations.

Last week, the EU Parliament and the EU member states agreed on a draft which, among other things, provides for the phasing out of free ETS certificates and at least brings a certain basic fairness towards all market participants into the CBAM regulation and could also be WTO-compliant.

Aggressive media campaigns by lobbyists

The EU steel and aluminium producers and their lobby organisations feel that they are no longer sufficiently protected from international competitors by the results of the negotiations. Even before the negotiations between the EU Parliament and the member states, they had been campaigning massively and aggressively to extend protection for them.

Growth only possible outside the comfort zone

Thorsten Gerber, CEO of the Gerber Group, said today: “Wouldn’t it be better if steel and aluminium producers invested more in their competitiveness instead of in political media campaigns for more subsidies and protectionism? Because growth, as we all know, only happens outside the comfort zone.”
