Update: No order to close iron and steel units, says minister

In a bid to clear the confusion created by reports that the state government has issued an order to shut down the iron and steel industry due to lack of oxygen, Industries Minister Sundar Sham Arora said on April 26, 2021, according to a report by indiatimes.com, that there were no such orders and the industry has only been asked to stop processes that use oxygen.

There is no ban on operation on the iron and steel industry in Punjab

Arora said, “There is no ban on operation on the iron and steel industry in Punjab. We have only ordered to shut down processes using oxygen. The step is taken as an emergency measure to meet the high demand for the medical grade gas for Covid patients. Once the situation improves and there is sufficient buffer stock of oxygen in the state, the order will be revoked.”

Acute shortage of ventilators and medical oxygen

The background to this is that India is in the midst of the third wave of the Corona pandemic and there is an acute shortage of ventilators and medical oxygen. India as a whole has been particularly hard hit by the Corona pandemic. The health care system is in severe disrepair. Almost 200,000 people have died with or from a Covid19 infection.

For months, Indian steel and iron manufacturers have been supporting the health care effort by providing medical oxygen.
