Sentiment among German exporters brightens

25 February 2025 – Sentiment among German exporters improved by almost 30% in February after the figures for German exports turned out to be much more positive than many had assumed in advance. South Korea imposes anti-dumping duties of up to 38% on Chinese stainless steel plates.

Sentiment among German exporters brightens

Even though the barometer for export expectations in Germany is still slightly negative, the mood among German exporters improved by almost 30% in February, according to the German ifo Institute.

Despite all the prophecies of doom, German exports only fell by around 1% in 2024 compared to the previous year, as preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office shows.

And while China has become slightly less important as a trading partner for German companies, German companies have been able to export significantly more goods to the United States.

German exporters now need momentum and a spirit of optimism

Overall, Germany will see a significant increase of 13% in exports in 2024 compared to 2021. What the export-orientated German economy needs now is dynamism and a spirit of optimism – and it could be a good idea not just to wait for demand from abroad to pick up, but to become active itself.

South Korea imposes anti-dumping duties on Chinese stainless steel plates

Last week, the Trade Commission of South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties of up to 38.02% on stainless steel plates (HSK 7219.21.1010, 7219.21.1090, 7219.21.9000, 7219.22.1010, 7219.22.1090, 7219.22.9000) originating from China.

In addition, the Trade Commission recently recommended extending the existing anti-dumping measures against flat-rolled stainless steel imports from China, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Even if the existing anti-dumping measure against flat-rolled stainless steel is to be extended, it would probably have made more sense to do more here and in this way reduce the opportunities that arise from circumvention measures and thus save further trouble with the European and US customs authorities.
