
14 January 2026 – Nickel prices on the LME rose above the USD 18,000 mark again today. Media reports once more suggested that the Indonesian government could set RKAB mining quotas for 2026 at between 250 and 260 million tonnes of nickel ore.
LME Nickel Prices Break Above the USD 18,000 Mark
After reaching a peak of USD 18,650 per metric tonne on 7 January, LME nickel prices retreated again the following day. Since then, prices have not only recovered but have continued to rise steadily, settling at around USD 18,000 per metric tonne in recent days and shortly ahead of the contract rollover.
During trading on Wednesday, LME nickel recorded a renewed and significant increase, breaking above the USD 18,000 threshold and last trading more than 5% higher.
By contrast, Asian nickel prices on the SHFE moved largely sideways today.
So Far Only Media Reports on New RKAB Quotas?
Most recently, media reports indicated that the Indonesian government could set RKAB mining quotas for 2026 at between 250 and 260 million tonnes of nickel ore. However, as of now, no official statement or announcement has been published on the website of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
