28 February 2024 – The German automotive industry has recovered significantly since the end of the pandemic. Exports have developed particularly positively for car manufacturers. And the UK Trade Remedies Authority has announced that it will maintain the anti-dumping duties against Chinese aluminium extrusions unchanged.
German automotive sector on recovery course
The German automotive industry has made a comeback since the coronavirus pandemic. While local automotive production declined between 2016 and 2022, it has since recovered and is now around ten per cent below its pre-pandemic level, following a slump of around 35 per cent at its lowest point.
One reason for the upturn is that exports have increased and the share of net exports of motor vehicles in gross domestic product (GDP) has now returned to the 2018 level at 2.9 per cent in 2023.
UK: TRA upholds recommendations on aluminium extrusions from China
The Trade Remedies Authorities (TRA) of the United Kingdom decided yesterday, Tuesday, not to change the recommendation to impose anti-dumping measures against certain aluminium extrusions from China that were adopted in December 2022. A UK producer had lodged an application against the TRA’s recommendation and the decision of the Secretary of State for Business and Trade.
Large aluminium extrusions remain exempt
However, TRA has also clarified in its communication that certain large aluminium extrusions (products over 310mm cross-sectional dimension and products with a weight greater than 14kg/metre) will continue to be exempted from the AD measures. The measure and the resulting anti-dumping duties of up to 35.1% therefore remain in force unchanged.
