18 January 2024 – New car registrations in the European Union and vehicle sales in the United States increased significantly in 2023. In the EU, new registrations increased by almost 14% year-on-year. In the United States, sales increased by more than 12%, or almost 2 million vehicles.
Strong increase in new car registrations in the European Union in 2023
New car registrations in the European Union rose sharply last year. Although the momentum slowed recently, the number of newly registered cars in the EU fell by just 3.3 percent to 867,052 in December compared to the high starting point a year ago, as the European industry association ACEA announced in Brussels on Thursday. For the year as a whole, 10.5 million cars were registered, 13.9 percent more than a year earlier.

Battery electric cars overtook diesel vehicles in popularity among buyers in 2023, taking third place behind petrol cars and hybrid electric cars.
Italy, Spain and France lead the way
With the exception of Hungary, all EU markets grew overall last year. The three largest markets Italy (+18.9 percent), Spain (+16.7 percent) and France (+16.1 percent) recorded double-digit growth. In Germany, growth amounted to 7.3 percent.
US car sales rise by 12.3% in 2023
US car sales also increased significantly again in 2023 after the vehicle market had weakened in 2022. In the United States, growth of 12.3% on the previous year was recorded, or an increase of almost 2 million additional passenger cars and light trucks (pickups, trucks, SUVs). Remarkably, despite one fewer sales day in December 2023, 13% more vehicles were sold compared to the same month last year.
