EU member states agree on military deployment in the Red Sea

The EU member states have reached a political agreement in principle on the launch of a military operation to secure merchant shipping in the Red Sea. This was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell after a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. According to diplomats, the mission should ideally start next month and end the attacks by militant Islamist Huthi from Yemen.

The German government wants to participate in the EU mission with the ultra-modern frigate “Hessen”, which specializes in air surveillance and air defence.

The United States and the United Kingdom recently attacked targets in Yemen that are believed to belong to the Houthi rebels, destroying weapons depots and launchers in the process.

UAE with scrap export tax instead of ban in future?

According to various media reports, the United Arab Emirates has lifted the export ban on ferrous scrap. Even if this lifting of the export ban cannot be verified due to a lack of reliable sources in the media reports.

Scrap export tax the more interesting model?

In place of the export ban on scrap metal that has been in place since 2020, an export tax is now to be levied on the export of scrap metal from the UAE. There is talk of at least AED 400 per tonne of ferrous scrap. This is an interesting model that could potentially be adopted by other countries in the future.
