EU countries push for further sanctions against Russian metals

According to media reports, several EU countries have called for further sanctions against Russian exports. Once again, the focus appears to be on aluminium, which continues to be imported into the European Union on a large scale despite some existing restrictions.

Proposal for new sanctions package expected in January

The EU Commission’s next proposal for the 16th sanctions package is expected in the second half of January to coincide with the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Sanctions against aluminium have already failed several times

Several attempts have already been made in recent years to enforce a comprehensive ban on the import of aluminium from Russian production at EU level. So far, this has failed due to resistance from several EU states, including France and Hungary. However, France is said to have given up its resistance in the meantime.

EU launches new safeguard investigation on raw material imports

The European Commission announced today that it has launched a safeguard investigation against imports of manganese and silicon alloys at the request of several EU member states. These types of alloys are used, for example, in steel makers.

The Safeguard investigation is justified by the fact that total imports of the product concerned have risen from 1.3 million tonnes in 2020 to 1.6 million tonnes in mid-2024.
