23 May 2025 – The EU Parliament yesterday voted in favor of the Commission’s proposed amendments to the Carbon Border Tax CBAM and once again decided in favor of its multinational conglomerates and against the economic interests of small and medium-sized enterprises. German economy grows significantly faster than expected and business climate index improves in May.
Economy picks up speed: Germany starts the year with growth
The German economy is starting the year 2025 with a tailwind: in the first quarter, gross domestic product rose by 0.4% – more than initially expected. The manufacturing industry (+1%), exports (+3.2%) and imports (+1.1%) in particular provided momentum. Private consumption (+0.5%) and increased investments underpinned the upward trend. Gross value added also increased again for the first time after four declines (+0.6%).
German business climate index rises for May
At the same time, the mood in companies is improving significantly. The ifo Business Climate Index rose to 87.5 points in May. Expectations are brightening in almost all sectors – particularly in trade, construction and the service industry. The construction industry has already recorded its fourth consecutive rise in sentiment.
Together, the economic data and business climate signal a stable recovery and growing optimism – a positive sign for Germany as a business location.
CBAM changes: EU Parliament decides against SME
Yesterday, the European Parliament voted on the European Commission’s draft amendment to the Carbon Border Tax CBAM and voted by a clear majority in favor of the Commission’s proposals.
This means that, despite claims to the contrary, small and medium-sized enterprises in the EU have once again been trampled underfoot. The decision that has now been taken is clearly aimed solely at protecting over-subsidized multinational corporations. Everyone must now decide for themselves whether and who they support with their purchases.
