4 September 2026 – ArcelorMittal announced this week that it intends to end crude steel production at its Duisburg Ruhrort steelworks. At the same time, slab imports from Brazil are rising dramatically. South Africa: export restrictions are not keeping metal in the country. A lesson for Europe?
26 August 2026 – Canada announced yesterday that it intends to respond with countermeasures from 8 September to the US Section 338 tariffs, which have been applied for the first time. More than 870 products are to be subjected to new tariffs. Indonesian confusion over nickel quotas: one producer reports higher quotas, while the industry association says it knows nothing about them.
10 August 2026 – Australia’s only silicon producer is abandoning the US market, just nine months after the critical minerals agreement with Washington. A textbook example of tariffs hitting the wrong target. And of a European Commission making the same mistake, only on a considerably larger scale.
