4 December 2025 – The European Commission wants to hear your opinion on the proposed steel tariffs of 50% and the reduction of import quotas by more than 45%. SMEs are now called upon to stand up against the Commission’s proposal. The consultation will only run for a few more days – act now!
Have your say: Commission Wants to Hear Opinion on Steel Tariffs
Even before the publication of the Commission’s proposal for the “Trade measure addressing the negative trade-related effects of global excess capacity on the EU steel sector”, the Commission had carried out a so-called “Have your say“. A survey that can hardly be described as representative, yet one on which the Commission relies disproportionately strongly in its reasoning for the steel tariffs and quotas and sees itself confirmed in its actions – because the survey was exploited by the steel producers!
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular were underrepresented in the first Have your say survey – hardly surprising, given that the Commission does very little to draw attention to these consultations or to actively address a representative number of companies. This often leads to SMEs not having a voice in these surveys.
Steel Producers’ Lobby Shamelessly Exploits Have your say
At the same time, the steel producers’ lobby and the companies associated with it shamelessly exploit the system. Not only do their associations publish their views there, but every steel mill can simply submit the same contribution as its association and is then counted as an independent voice.
Companies Can Participate Independently of their Associations
The fact that member companies can participate independently of their association unfortunately does not seem to be known to some European associations – as the results of the first Have your say on steel tariffs and quotas have already shown.
SMEs Now Called Upon to Stand Up Against Steel Tariffs
To ensure that this does not happen again with the second Have your say, which deals directly with the Commission’s proposal, we are calling on all small and medium-sized enterprises to urgently take part in this consultation. Otherwise, the Commission will once again feel confirmed in its actions by the same recurring survey results from the steel producers!
Steel Tariffs and Quotas Threaten European Competitiveness
This is about nothing less than the future of the downstream steel-processing industry in Europe, which is to be deprived of its competitiveness through the introduction of these tariffs and a reduction of the quotas. Together with the upcoming costs of the CO2 tax CBAM, production cost increases of up to 30% are looming in the EU.
